Frequently Asked Questions

Can I save my progress?

Yes. There is a Save button on each page of the Agricultural Return. The Excel template can be downloaded, saved to your computer, and completed as needed. Supporting documents remain stored on the portal once uploaded.

Can I update, edit, or delete information on the RSS Portal?

Yes — as long as you have not fully submitted your return. You can amend the Agricultural Return, delete uploaded documents, and upload revised versions at any time before submission.

Does “Complete and sign” in Section H fully submit my RSS form?

No. “Complete and sign” only finalises the Agricultural Return section. Your application is only submitted once you have uploaded the Land Declaration, any supporting documents, and clicked Submit Application.

How can I add information if I forgot something?
  • Before submission: You can edit or upload information at any time.
  • After submission: Use the Support button on the left-hand side of the portal to request your application be returned for changes.
Where do I complete the staff declaration?

In the Excel Land Declaration template. Use the tabs at the bottom:

  • Land Declaration (required for all enterprises)
  • Market Garden Areas (if applicable)
  • Staff Annex A (required for all enterprises)
Do I need to complete all tabs in the Excel sheet (Crops, Categories, Notes and Guidance, Land Examples, Pivot Tables)?

No.

  • Crops, Categories, Pivot Tables: Office use only (support dropdown menus).
  • Notes and Guidance / Land Examples: For your reference only. You can also download scheme guidance from the RSS Portal dashboard.
Some of my crops aren’t listed in the dropdown menu — what should I do?

Select Other.

  • For many small crop areas, record them in the Market Garden tab and write the crop name beside the column.
  • For large crop areas not listed (or planned for 2026), please inform the team so they can consider adding them next year.
I’m unsure which category my land falls under. What should I do?

First, consult the scheme guidance. If you’re still unsure, use the Support link to contact the team. Include the field number and management practices so they can advise you.

I follow organic practices but am not accredited — can I classify my land as organic?

No. Organic classification requires formal accreditation. Unaccredited claims cannot be accepted.

What supporting documentation should I upload?

Upload as much relevant evidence as possible.

If you are not accredited to an auditable scheme (e.g. Red Tractor, LEAF, BRC), you should upload any IFM plans you are claiming for, such as soil, waste, or water management plans. This ensures transparency and supports your claim.

How long will it take to receive my RSS payment?

After submission:

  1. The team reviews your application and documentation.
  2. If criteria are met, it is submitted for formal review.
  3. You will receive an email confirming approval, your support amount, and instructions for applying for the Tier 4 Grant.

Payment is usually made around 30 days after approval.
